Abstract

This map is based on 94 individuals from the interspecific cross C. frutescens var. BG 2814-6 x C. annuum cv. NuMex RNaky. It is based on the same cross as that of Pepper-FA03 map, but a different subset of F2 individuals. While other pepper maps have been reported in the past, this is the first complete map in the sense that the 12 contiguous linkage groups corresponding to the 12 pepper chromosomes have been deduced for the genome of cultivated C. annuum, as well as that of wild C. annuum and related Capsicum species.

The genetic map spans 1613cM and comprises of 381 markers, including 271 Conserved Ortholog Set or COSII markers (CAPS/dCAPS/amplicon size difference), 25 tomato or pepper-derived PCR-based markers (CAPS/dCAPS/amplicon size difference), 22 tomato-derived RFLP markers, 63 pepper-derived SSR markers. All markers are public except for 11 proprietary ones. Mapping of 307 orthologous markers in both pepper and tomato genomes permits inference of a detailed syntenic relationship between the pepper and tomato genomes, shedding new light on chromosome evolution in the Solanaceae. In addition, the position of additional 280 COSII markers was inferred in the pepper map via pepper-tomato synteny, bringing the total orthologous markers in the pepper genome to 587.
